Tinny Rally Origin Story
The first self-reliant tinny rally on the Murray River
ABOUT TINNY RALLY
SMALL BOATS. BIG ADVENTURE.
Tinny Rally is a self-reliant small-boat adventure built around exploration, camaraderie and making your own way.
You prepare your own boat, carry your own gear, navigate, camp and solve problems as they come.
We provide the framework and support.
You do the adventure.
WHY WE DO IT
We believe adventure is good for people.
Not another screen. Not another polished holiday. A real mission.
Pack the boat. Read the river. Solve problems. Find somewhere to camp. Help your mates. Sleep outside. Get up the next morning and do it again.
There is something bloody good about stepping out of normal life for a while and having something simple and real to do.
The phone matters less. The crew matters more. The days become about weather, fuel, boats, camps, food, the river and whatever problem needs solving next.
Tinny Rally was built to create more of that.
Not to tell people exactly where to go and what to do every hour, but to provide enough of a framework that ordinary people can take on a serious adventure themselves.
WHERE IT STARTED
Tinny Rally didn’t start as an event.
It started with one bloke, one cheap tinny, one spare motor and a question:
Could you travel hundreds of kilometres down the Murray River in a small boat, camp on the banks, stop at the old river pubs, work through the problems and make it all the way to the end under your own steam?
Before asking anyone else to do it, Dan went first.
The first winter scouting trip proved the bones of the idea — the distances, towns, camps, pubs and river all worked.
Then he went again.
On a second summer trip, he surveyed the river, marked camps, tested side missions, checked fuel stops and gathered the detail that would later become the Tinny Rally Navigator’s Chart and Book of Dreams.
That second trip sharpened the idea.
This was not just a route.
It was a format.
A one-way small-boat expedition where people prepare their own boat, travel with their own crew, make their own decisions and earn the finish.
But they aren’t abandoned out there.
That became the heart of Tinny Rally:
On your own. Not alone.
Tinny Rally ran its first Rally in 2024.
What started with one small boat has grown into a field of boats travelling the river together — each crew doing its own adventure, but all part of the same mission.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
SMALL BOATS MAKE THE ADVENTURE BIGGER
The humble tinny is part of the point.
Small boats are simple, accessible and limited enough that you have to think, prepare and improvise.
The limits aren’t there to make the Rally smaller.
They protect what makes it an adventure.
SELF-RELIANCE MAKES IT YOURS
You bring the boat.
You carry the gear.
You navigate, camp, make decisions and solve the ordinary expedition problems along the way.
Tinny Rally provides the framework and support.
You do the adventure.
ON YOUR OWN. NOT ALONE.
You can absolutely take a few mates and run the Murray yourself.
But that isn’t the same thing as a Tinny Rally.
There is something different about a whole field moving down the river with the same purpose.
Pub stops fill with Rally crews. Campgrounds come alive at sunset. Strangers become mates. A broken motor becomes a group effort. A boat you passed in the morning becomes the crew you’re having a beer with that night.
The route is not the Rally.
The Rally is the people.
GOOD FOR THE PLACES WE GO
We reckon the places we travel through should be better off because we came.
Regional towns aren’t scenery around the adventure. They’re part of it.
Tinny Rally crews buy fuel, stay in accommodation, visit pubs, hire boats, buy supplies, get repairs, use local services and spend money in the communities they travel through.
The Rally also works with local people and businesses to help make the adventure possible.
The Murray River was where Tinny Rally started, but this principle goes wherever the Rally goes:
bring people into a region, experience it properly and leave some value behind.
GIVING BACK ALONG THE WAY
Tinny Rally is a commercial adventure business.
Along the way, we also create opportunities for the Rally community to support causes that matter to us.
Our final-night charity auction has recently raised money for Mankind Project Australia, an organisation that has been personally meaningful to Tinny Rally founder Dan Willersdorf.
We’d rather do useful things and tell you what we actually did than make big promises about being something we’re not.
THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE RALLY
Tinny Rally might look pretty loose from the river.
Behind it is a serious crew.
Sweep boats, mechanics, road support, logistics, communications, event crew and local people all help keep a large field moving downriver.
Most importantly, the Rally works because the participants become part of that system too.
People help each other.
Crews look out for each other.
And when things go sideways, there is usually another legend nearby willing to lend a hand.
On your own. Not alone.
