Meet the Tinny Rally Recovery Crew
The Tinny Rally is self-led, but it is not unsupported.
Behind the fleet is a crew of river people, mechanics, road crew, and local allies who help keep the Rally moving when the river starts testing people.
This is the crew behind the ethos:

FOUNDER
Dan
Dan grew up in the river country south of the Murray.
He started the Tinny Rally to create a real adventure — not a polished tour or passive holiday.
Small boats. Long river days. Pubs. Sandbars. Campfires. Breakdowns. Big characters. Good stories.
Dan holds the shape of the Rally: the culture, route, crew, safety systems, and balance between freedom and support.
The Rally is self-led, but it is not careless.
Give people a real adventure.
And make sure no one gets left behind.
Sweeper Crew
Justin — The Rear Guard
Justin has spent more than 50 years exploring the Murray’s bends, backwaters, creeks, and hidden corners.
At the back of the fleet, he helps work out where broken boats are, whether everyone is safe, what the convoy can handle, and where support needs to move.
One breakdown is simple.
Three breakdowns, a lock deadline, and a tired fleet is when Justin becomes the key man.
Calm, experienced, and quietly essential.
Cathy — The Organiser
Cathy usually works alongside Justin in the sweeper boat.
She sees what needs doing before anyone has finished talking about it, keeps eyes on the details, supports the crew, and helps the rear of the fleet keep moving.
Every expedition needs someone to make sure it gets done.
Road Crew
Little Dave — The Job Gets Done
Little Dave joined the first Tinny Rally.
His motor fell off.
Most people would never return. Dave treated it as an invitation.
He also discovered that he and Dan were long-lost third cousins.
Since then, Dave has become part of the Recovery Crew backbone, driving support trucks, towing trailers, chasing parts, moving fuel, and recovering boats.
Late-night motor run? Trailer shuffle? Parts mission?
Dave is probably already on the road.
He often brings one of his seven kids along, all carrying the same work ethic.
James — The Battle Wagon
James grew up in the same town as Dan and now lives on the river at Loxton.
He ran fuel on the first Rally and has been part of the road crew ever since.
His chopped 200 Series, the Battle Wagon, is part workshop, recovery rig, toolbox, and spare-parts cave.
When Never Give Up Dom cracked his boat nearly in half and sank it, James produced an old sheet of tin from the back of the ute.
Because of course he had one.
They pop-riveted the boat together, and Dom made the finish.
Prepared. Ridiculous. Exactly who you want nearby when something breaks.
Mechanics
Jason “Baywatch” — The Honda Gun
Jason is one of the mechanics who joins the Rally from Honda Marine Australia.
He earned the name Baywatch because if someone needs help in the river, he dives in head first with his shirt off every time.
Outboard problems, fuel faults, motor swaps, and riverbank repairs are where Jason comes alive.
He embodies the Rally spirit so strongly that the Rally Spirit Recognition Trophy now carries his name.
Sam “Where’s My XXXX?” — Dragged Out of Retirement
Sam comes from Weipa on Cape York.
Dan dragged him out of retirement after five years and put him back on the tools.
On his first Rally, Sam repeatedly lost his own boat because it was handed to broken-down crews so they could keep moving.
That is the Rally:
Give up your boat.
Get someone else to the finish.
Work out the rest later.
Gun mechanic. Calm operator. Hard to rattle.
Hates cold weather.
River Allies
Flatout Matty Voigt — Riverland Boat Hire
Matty Voigt, better known as Flatout Matty, has helped since the first Rally.
It began when the Postie Boys arrived with their transom half falling off. Matty handed them a drill and pop riveter, and became part of the story.
Since then, he has helped with boats, parts, local knowledge, and whatever strange problem the Rally produces.
Some suppliers sell you something.
Others become part of the expedition.
Matty is the second kind.
Sarah and Tom — Woolshed Brewery
The Rally is carried by more than boats, motors, and recovery gear.
It is carried by river towns and locals who understand its spirit.
Sarah and Tom from the Woolshed Brewery were among the first to properly welcome the fleet.
They opened especially for the Rally, put on music, welcomed crews, and even lent a forklift to swap motors behind the brewery.
That is how the Tinny Rally grows.
Not through polish.
Through real people, real places, and stories worth retelling.
